Treatment of Post-traumatic Humeral Fractures and Complications Using the Osteoline® External Fixator: a Treatment Option

چکیده
UNLABELLED To evaluate the results obtained from treatment of humeral shaft fractures and their complications using the Osteoline(®) uniplanar external fixator. METHODS The radiographic and functional results from 78 patients with humeral shaft fractures treated using the uniplanar external fixation technique were retrospectively assessed. The patients' ages ranged from 23 to 71 years, with a mean of 47 years. Male patients predominated (79%). Out of the 78 patients, 45 presented open fractures, 14 presented pseudarthrosis and six presented synthesis failure. There were no losses during the follow-up and all the patients were discharged after fracture consolidation and functional recovery. The results were evaluated based on the studies by Catagni, as good, fair or poor. RESULTS Fracture consolidation was observed in 98% of the cases treated with uniplanar external fixation. Only one pseudarthrosis case required conversion to rigid internal fixation and autologous bone grafting. At the end of the treatment, all the patients were discharged with consolidated fractures, without pain, and good limb function. CONCLUSION The external fixation described in this paper was shown to be an efficient and safe method for treating humeral shaft fractures and their complications. It preserved the local biological status and enabled passive and active movement immediately after surgery.

Treatment of Pediatric Open Femoral Fractures with External Fixator Versus Flexible Intramedullary Nails
Background: In children, inappropriate treatment of open femoral fractures may induce several complications. A few studies have compared the external fixator with flexible intramedullary nails in high-grade open femoral fractures of children. The present study aims at comparing results of these two treatment methods in open femoral fractures. Methods: In this descriptive analytical study, 27 ...
متن کاملTreatment of Open Tibial Fractures: Convert-ing or Continuing External Fixation?
Background: The treatment of open tibial fractures is still an orthopaedic challenge and full of complications. In many cases the use of external fixator that has been known as a non-union machine is obligatory with a high incidence of pin track infection and other complications. The aim of this study was to compare the use of external fixation as a definite method for treatment of open tibial ...

Background and purpose: Ëxternal fixation is currently considered as a standard treatment for open tibial fractures however, due to the long-term hospitalization and some other complications, some researchers have proposed intramedullary nailing as the alternative surgical treatment. This study was conducted to compare the treatment of open tibial shaft fractures by external fixation and int...
متن کاملSuccess Rate and Complications of Comminuted Intra-Articular Distal Radius Fracture Treatment via Closed Reduction and Use of a Mini-External Fixator
BACKGROUND Intra-articular fracture of the distal radius is extremely common; however, the management of this fracture is controversial. OBJECTIVES With regard to the importance of intra-articular fracture of the distal radius and the best treatment method for the fracture, we sought to assess the success rate following the treatment of comminuted intra-articular fractures of the distal radiu...
متن کاملManagement of pediatric open supracondylar humerus fracture using external
Open supracondylar fractures of the humerus are rare in children, and the treatment strategy for these fractures is yet to be standardized. We present the case of an 8-year-old boy with open supracondylar humerus fracture that was managed with an external wrist fixator. A good clinical outcome was achieved in this case, without the development of any complications over a 6-month follow-up period.
